The Vought F4U was a carrier based fighter designed at the request of the US Navy in 1938.  The maiden flight of the XF4U-1 occurred on 29th May 1940.  By the end of 1940 the F4U had flown at 404 mph (650 kph).  With the F4U, the US achieved its air supremacy in the Pacific during 1943.  The F4U's great performance was revealed as it shot down 2,140 enemy aircraft in a total of 64,051 missions with only 189 losses.  A total of 12681 F4U's were produced, and it provided service until 1965.
